My research is focused on regeneration of livers and kidneys during organ preservation prior to transplantation. I have developed a novel model of normothermic ex vivo liver perfusion with the aim to assess and repair liver grafts during the preservation period. We apply novel strategies of inhibition of pro-inflammatory pathways and stem cell therapy to repair and regenerate damaged liver tissue. This will allow us to improve graft function after transplantation with decreased morbidity and mortality of our patients. In addition, regeneration of liver grafts presents the possibility to extend the current criteria of acceptable grafts and will allow us to extend the donor pool by utilizing marginal grafts.
